What is it? Kultrun is a world music festival that has been held in Victoria Park in Kitchener for many years now. It’s been described as the Region’s ‘biggest outdoor dance party,’ and for good reason. Each year, they feature outstanding local, national and international world music bands, and this year is set to be no different. You can also expect lots of interactive activities, workshops by professional artists, performance art, a food, craft and art market and a beergarden cantina.

We recommend going both days, but if you can only make on Saturday, there a number of fantastic artists who are only performing that day, including:

Juneyt from Kitchener – Performing at 3pm on Saturday

The Jerry Cans from Iqaluit, Nunavut – Performing at 6:15pm

Bareto from Peru – Performing at 9:45pm

When does it start? The festival kicks off on Saturday at 1:15pm and runs all day. For a full schedule, check out the event website.

What is it? The Lovegoods are a Kitchener ‘Wizard Rock’ band. What the heck does that mean? Well, it means they combine rockin’ music with the magical world of Hogwarts & Harry Potter. their sound can be described as, “a mix of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Eisley and a whole lot of magic!” Doesn’t that sound awesome? If you agree, you’ll want to definitely attend their CD release tonight.

When does it start? 7:30pm

Where is it happening? Button Factory Arts on Regina Street in Waterloo

How much does it cost? $10

Why should you go? You’d have to be a real muggle to not want to attend this event! In all seriousness though, their music has the perfect mix of geekiness and badassery. Listen for yourself!

July Red Tent

Photo: Facebook

What is it? The Red Tent movement is sort of like a church or temple just for women. The idea is that women excel the most when they have other women rallying and supporting them. It’s a bit hard to understand until you actually attend, but think of it as spiritual experiences just for women. A Sacred Journey runs their own version of Red Tents every month, and open to women from just about every background. At these gatherings, they invite women to share their “stories, tears and laughter.”

When does it start? 6pm

Where is it happening? A Sacred Journey on Louise Street in Kitchener

How much does it cost? $0 – this is a FREE event!

Why should you go? If you’re looking to meet new people (or ‘sisters’, as they refers to one another) and are drawn to spiritual experiences, A Sacred Journey’s Red Tents will probably be right up your alley! For a better idea about what we’re talking about, here’s a trailer for a documentary about these unique events!

Donut Party | Slate Church Interest Social

Photo: Facebook

What is it? Slate Church isn’t your typical church. They use hashtags, social media, Twitter chats, write blogs, and will soon have their own podcast, to name just a few things. In fact, they describe themselves as a startup rather than just simply a church. So naturally, they’re trying to show people who they are in unique ways, and on Sunday one of those ways will be through a Donut Party. It’s a chance to enjoy tasty treats while also learning about what they do as a church.
